Study Buddhism in Japan
The BDK Fellowship is a prestigious scholarship program offered by Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai (BDK) Japan.
This program provides selected scholars from around the world with the unique opportunity to study Buddhism in Japan. Fellows receive funding for research, access to Buddhist temples and universities, and the chance to immerse themselves in Japanese Buddhist culture and practice.
Applications are accepted annually from March through July. Selected fellows typically begin their studies in the following academic year.

Purpose
Promotes international cooperation and mutual understanding by letting non-Japanese researchers study Buddhism in Japan.

Eligibility
Open to researchers of any non-Japanese nationality, preferably advanced graduate students working on a Ph.D. or established scholars. Japanese language fluency is not required.

Affiliation
Recipients must conduct their research while affiliated with a Japanese university or research institute (such as the University of Tokyo or Kyoto University).

Duration & Timeline
Lasts for a one-year term. Applications typically close on July 31 each year for the upcoming cohort.
